Automakers don’t mess with their icons, and this holds true for the refreshed 2022 Mini 3-door, which, like most updated – and even completely redesigned -- Mini models, looks hardly any different from the one that came before.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The 2022 Mini 3-door’s changes are cosmetic: the round headlights are now standard LEDs, and there’s a new grille insert. Inside, the dash is a bit simpler.
Available Trims
Mini offers the Cooper 3-Door in base, S, JCW and SE trims, each of which gets a different powertrain. Base models use a 1.5L turbo three-cylinder; Cooper S and JCW get a 2.0L turbo with different performance levels; and Cooper SE is an all-electric option. Gas models start with a six-speed manual transmission that options to a seven-speed automatic, or an eight-speed in the case of the JCW. All Cooper 3-Door models are front-drivers.
Standard Features
Cooper starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, engine auto stop/start, LED headlights, manual A/C, a heated steering wheel, six-speaker audio, ambient lighting, rear parking sensors, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen.
Cooper S adds a hood scoop, chrome fuel door, dual exhausts, and sport seats.
A Cooper/Cooper S premium trim brings navigation, Apple CarPlay, and connected services. Premier+ gains a heated steering wheel, passive keyless entry, panoramic roof, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a head-up display, digital gauges, wireless phone charging. and automatic A/C.
JCW gains 17-inch wheels, aero tweaks, and trim-specific sport front seats.
Cooper SE gets 16-inch wheels, adaptive headlights, Union Jack taillights, heated front seats, and active cruise control.
Fuel Economy
Mini’s fuel consumption estimates for the base Cooper are 8.2/6.2 L/100 km (city/highway) with the automatic transmission, and 8.7/6.3 L/100 km with the standard stickshift. Cooper S’s ratings are 8.5/6.2 with the automatic, and 10.5/7.3 for six-speed models; and the JCW is rated for 9.3/6.9 with the eight-speed auto, and 10.5/7.3 in six-speed form.
Competition
The base Cooper 3-Door faces few direct competitors. Cooper S goes up against the VW GTI, Honda Civic Si, and Subaru WRX; JCW models compete with the Hyundai Veloster N.
